I read a news article recently and want to share it with you. The two women in the photo are Tricia Dearborn and Cynthia Nelson. In 2017, they spoke out in favour of marriage equality, and this year, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, they got married in Sydney.

Let me talk about their’s love story to you! The first time Cynthia heard about homosexual marriage was in the 1980s. She wasn't sure it would work in Australia. She met Tricia in 2004 on the lesbian dating site Pink Sofa. Tricia is a poet and writer. They first campaigned for marriage equality in 2011. Actually, they didn’t know whether to get married or not. After consideration, she still decided to support it, because she wanted to have such a choice.

Finally, the couple, who got engaged in November 2019, married in a Covid safe ceremony at the rotunda of Camperdown Park in Sydney at the end of October 2020. Their marriage was described as “Fun, spontaneous and full of love” by their friends.

This same-sex marriage case let me think about intersectionality and gender equality. This concept emphasizes differences in gender, class, race or sexual orientation among individuals. Gender and sexual orientation are the combined characteristics in this case study. Homosexuals themselves are stigmatized by society, quite apart from same-sex marriage. It was a very special wedding. They have to overcome the worldly view to get married. It was also reported by News. But this could have been one of the thousands of weddings. They seem to be given a bad label. This case study shows that particular discrimination and oppression arise from the combination of multiple individual identities.
